Limited Edition

A limited edition is a pinball machine sold on scarcity: the maker announces a fixed production count up front, and the machine carries the proof — a sequentially numbered plaque, a signed certificate of authenticity, artwork and trim the standard models of the title don’t get.^[1] The class covers machines offered as a distinct limited version of a game, whatever the maker calls it, not machines that merely happened to be built in small numbers.

From a name to a standing tier

The label predates real scarcity. Williams sold a Black Knight (Limited Edition) in 1981 and Bally an Eight Ball Deluxe (Limited Edition) the year after — the latter a “limited” run of 2,388 machines. The modern anatomy arrived in 1994 with The Addams Family Special Collectors Edition: exactly 1,000 built, each carrying a numbered gold plate and a certificate signed by the design team.^[2] Stern made the idea a fixture. After one-off limited runs in the late 2000s and James Cameron’s Avatar (Limited Edition) (2010) — 250 machines, with features the standard release lacked^[3] — its titles came to ship in Pro, Premium and Limited Edition models,^[4] the Limited Edition topping the line with exclusive artwork, a global cap and the numbered plaque.^[1]

The boundary

What defines the class is the announced cap, not its size, and the class keeps its identity under other names: a Collector’s Edition carries the same numbered plaque and signatures — Jersey Jack Pinball’s Toy Story 4 (Collector’s Edition) is “one of just 1,000 units produced”, with a signed signature card^[5] — and for the boutique makers the edition can be the whole run: Spooky Pinball capped The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Collector’s Edition) and its siblings at 888 units across all models.^[6] Outside the class sit the ordinary Pro and Premium models of the same titles, and machines rare only because few were built or sold — a short run is not an edition unless the maker sold it as one.
