Subway Kickbacks
A Kickback variant in which the ball does not return up the outlane it fell through. Instead, the ball drops into a drain hole, travels through a subway passage beneath the playfield, and is ejected from a scoop or vertical up-kicker elsewhere on the table — turning a would-be drain into an unexpected change of position. Stern’s JAWS features a memorable example: the “Wheel Save” routes the ball from the left outlane through a subway, requiring the player to complete a timing mini-game with a rotating ship’s wheel before the ball ejects from the Orca VUK. The mechanic adds a theatrical twist to the standard kickback, transforming a simple rescue into a playfield event.
