Spinning Targets

A small metal plate, roughly one inch by one and a half inches, mounted on the playfield so that it spins about its center along a horizontal axis when struck by the ball. The spinning motion provides immediate visual feedback — the target whirls in place after each hit — and registers a score through a switch triggered by the rotation. Spinning targets first appeared on Gottlieb’s Swing-Along (1963) and were cataloged on over 670 IPDB machines, making them one of the more widely used target types across the Electromechanical era. They are closely related to Rollunders, which use a similar overhead mechanism.
