    description
*Space Orbit* is [[manufacturer:lori]]'s unlicensed, from-scratch copy of [[manufacturer:gottlieb]]'s single-player *[[model:space-orbit]]* — an [[technology-generation:electromechanical]] *bootleg* rebuilt in [[location:italy/bo/bologna]]. The Gottlieb source was itself an [[reward-type:add-a-ball]] game, one built for export to Italy in 1972,[1] and that reward type was the whole point: a 1965 Italian law had outlawed pinball as gambling, so a machine sold there could reward the player only with further balls, never a free [[reward-type:replay]] — which is exactly what add-a-ball means.[2] The machine was already a patchwork of Gottlieb's own parts: its [[theme:outer-space]] backglass borrowed artwork from Gottlieb's 1972 *[[model:outer-space]]*, while its playfield followed the layout of the earlier *[[model:mini-cycle]]* and *[[model:polo]]*.[3] The design drew several Italian copyists — [[manufacturer:rmg]] rebuilt it as *[[model:space-orbit-2]]* (1972) and [[manufacturer:mondialmatic]] as *[[model:big-dryvers]]* (1979) — with LORI's copy among them.

In 1965 an Italian law declared pinball outlaw because of gambling. A few artisans in Bologna found a workaround and started to sell new machines that allowed them to win only other balls and not matches.

This game was made for export to Italy. Compare the backglass artwork to Gottlieb's 1972 'Outer Space'. The playfield layout is similar to Gottlieb's 1970 'Mini Cycle' and Gottlieb's 1970 'Polo'
