ipdb.notes
IPDB A copy of the 1972 Gottlieb add-a-ball 'Space Orbit!'. The owner of the game with serial number 05074 (pictured here) found its "WOW" feature was inoperative. Using a wiring diagram from Gottlieb's 1972 'Space Orbit', it was discovered that a 350 Mfd Capacitor and a 20 Ohm Resistor were not factory-installed, thus that feature had never worked. The two wires for these missing components had been soldered to ring terminals and screwed to the underside of the upper playfield near the switch bank. There was no ground wire nearby for them. To fix this, the missing components were placed per the wiring diagram, and the required ground wire was run from the nearby pop bumper. The "WOW" feature then worked correctly. Incidentally, the relay hardware is stamped 'Gottlieb' but the coils are branded by the manufacturer, indicating "R. Montanari, Bologna". Also, the cardholder on this game has the oval viewing window used for the Italian games that have kick-up balls, although this game model does not have that feature. Federico Croci, a collector in Italy, informs us that this manufacturer extensively reused parts from Gottlieb games, including hardware and cardholders. While the cardholder has provisions for an illuminated ball-in-play display, the playfield does not, having only holes drilled for the six lamps but no lamp sockets or cabling for them, as the ball count is displayed on the backglass. We don't know if the style of lockdown bar shown in the pictures is original to this model, and the owner states that a standard Gottlieb lockdown bar from 1972 will mount properly to this machine. used
