- IPDB "Smart Ball" is a category of game and has various playfield designs. The game pays out in balls dispensed from the backbox to roll down the playfield glass towards the player. If too many balls accumulate to start blocking the playfield from view, the player may place them in a nearby counting tray. The metal cup on the cabinet front is an ashtray, unless it has been removed. Yasushi Watanabe, a pinball hobbyist in Japan, tells us that Smart Ball is a variety of pachinko that was popular from the late 50s to the early 70s. The few surviving games are now perceived as an old-fashioned attraction and not as gambling. used
