- Pictured here are two Instruction/Score cards designated "ROXY SPL." We find no information on a specific version of this game called "Roxy Special" and we notice these cards lack the center text listing "Extra Free Games" for achieving the smaller numbers seen in the top center of the backglass. This suggests this second schedule of awards can be disabled by the operator, perhaps in compliance with local restrictions if not just simply for operator choice.
In the Billboard ad shown here, dated Feb-3-1940, page 80, Chicago Coin apologizes for not meeting a great response for this game. As this game first came out about 2 weeks prior to the formation of this ad, the demand seems apparent. A Billboard ad the following week asked customers to "bear with us". This demand is proven in the quantity of Roxy games made as compared to production run quantities of the games that immediately preceded it.
'Roxy' was likely named after an actual entertainment venue, but we are not sure which one. At the time this game was manufactured in Chicago, the Roxy Theatre in New York showed motion pictures and held lavish stage shows. It was demolished in 1960.
