IPDB The game pictured here is the only example of 'Madrid' that we have seen. The backglass is nearly identical to that of United's 1947 'Havana' in that it does not have the large numbers 1 through 10 representing the numbered bumpers on that game. The playfield also is nearly identical and does not number its bumpers. We were told that the cabinet has no graphics, just varnished wood. The first game with electromechanical flippers was Gottlieb's Humpty Dumpty in October 1947. The first flipper game by United was United's 1948 'Wisconsin' in November 1948. Operators of this period would soon retrofit flipperless games, like Madrid, and these new flippers often ended up in unusual places on the playfield. As far as our images indicate, United never did use the familiar plastic flipper bats on their pin games. They used a rubber ring stretched between two posts mounted on a pivoting metal bar. United referred to these devices as "Player Controlled Kickers". The flipper bats shown on this 'Madrid" may have been more available to the operators who performed the retrofit. We find no documentation for this game nor do we find any manufacturer ads in The Billboard or in Cash Box during 1947-1948. We did find three brief ads placed by distributors or jobbers: The Billboard, Feb-7-1948, page 131 Cash Box, Jun-26-1948, page 28 The Billboard, Sep-11-1948, page 123 The earliest of these ads prominently headlines 'Madrid' alongside United's 1948 'Tropicana' and Exhibit's 1948 'Mimi' as "Now Delivering" all three games. As those two games are both dated February 1948, we use that date for 'Madrid' as its earliest mention. used
