- IPDB This listing presents a special edition of the production game, Williams' 1951 'Jalopy'. Its identifiable differences from the production Jalopy games are as follows: � The top of the backglass scores only in increments of 1 million, up to a maximum of 29 million, same as the previous Williams' 1951 'Hayburners' and with similar pennant artwork. We expect the backbox mechanisms for the two games to be the same. � The triangle of six pop bumpers is pointing downward, not upward. � The top of the playfield has only one rollover lane, not three. � The six numbered playfield inserts are located at the top of the playfield, not at the bottom. � The playfield artwork is slightly different (for instance, the road curves more to the right). � The two playfield plastics have a light background instead of a red color but this appears to be the result of red fade because traces of red color can be seen along the plastics' edges and around the screw heads. A handwritten date on the inside of the coin door shows 9/10/51. The serial number for this game, 46397, places this game ahead of the production 'Jalopy' games and within the sequence of numbers for the production of 'Hayburners'. This number is found not only on the cabinet (and on a backbox tag) but also on the playfield below the right flipper. This tells us that the playfield was not merely inserted into a 'Hayburners' game randomly plucked off of the production line for experimental testing. Yet, we note the labels inside the game carry the 'HB' nomenclature which could mean that new labels indicating 'Jalopy' were not yet ready for this early game or not yet warranted. However, we do not know if production 'Jalopy' games also carried forward the 'HB' labeling and, if so, would make this detail unhelpful as supporting evidence of this game's uniqueness. We find no mention of a change of playfield design in The Billboard or Cash Box magazines and Williams' picture ads begin in their issues dated Sep-22-1951, showing the production version. The manufacturer's flyer and available promo photo also show the production version whereas, sometimes, they'll show sample games or Early Production versions that differ from production games. The game pictured here is the only example of which we are aware. If it was one of a quantity of sample games, and with them designed similar to the apparently successful 'Hayburners' (which was followed-up with 'Nags'), we would not think that they survived in-house testing to then fail on test location to the degree of having to return to the engineering department to undergo a complete redesign of its scoring system and playfield. Therefore, and until we have more and better information, we will classify this unique game as a prototype. The owner states the backglass is a reproduction and believes it to be a copy of an original that no longer exists. He indicated the previous owner believed it to have been made somewhere in the midwest USA. Without having manufacturer photos or other game examples to compare, we wonder of this repro glass is an exact copy or if (significant) artistic changes were made. We also wonder if more than one copy exists. We include it in this listing because it is the only example of the backglass that we have for this unique game. If anyone has information about this game that is not presented here, or has encountered another example like it, please contact us. If possible, include pictures of backglass and playfield and a focused close-up of the cabinet/playfield serial number. used
