ipdb.notes
IPDB Bally documentation has no game identified as "Hold Your Horses". Because the name on the backglass is not perfectly centered within its arced banner, we would have thought this was a simple operator's backglass rename of an existing Bally machine with all other features identical to it. However, we can find no single Bally horserace game that fits all the features of this one. This game is not a simple backglass name-change-only. After comparing this game to our online images of horserace games, we can offer the following: The backglass is identical to only two games: Bally's 1946 'Victory Derby' and Bally's 1946 'Victory Special' and we note all three backglasses do not show the Bally brand. Because the playfield instruction card refers to spelling out the game name for replays, only 'Victory Special' has the same number of letters as 'Hold Your Horses'. We presume, then, that the backbox insert is identical to 'Victory Special' in terms of the number of lamps and that the cabling supports this. The playfield has artwork identical to only those same two games but it also has four passive bumpers that those two games do not have. The professionally printed instruction card acknowledges that the four bumpers are marked A-B-C-D. None of our listings of horserace games that do have four passive bumpers (with or without a Skill Lane) have playfield artwork to match this playfield. The familiar red plastic ball-lift cap is branded "A Bally Product". The cabinet also differs from those two games in that the side of the cabinet is much deeper in its middle section. This deeper side shows artwork of a rider on horseback that we found only on two other games, Bally's 1947 'Jockey Club' and Bally's 1947 'Jockey Special', but those cabinets are different still, in that they do not have console backboxes that extend to the floor but have the more familiar shorter ones that unbolt and detach from the main cabinet, leaving the game on its legs. The riding crops depicted on the backbox and on the front of the cabinet appear to be original artwork but we find no games to match the full artwork depicted. Unusually, the side rails and lockdown bar are metal, not wood, and the coin entrance plate, missing the Bally brand, is mounted on a large metal plate that Bally games did not have. As different as this cabinet is from that of 'Victory Special', we note the serial number tag inside the front door does indicate VICTORY SPECIAL. With all of this variation, we find no one Bally horserace game that has the backglass, playfield, cabinet style, and cabinet art of 'Hold Your Horses' to allow us to say that this game is a simple operator's backglass field conversion of an existing Bally game. We don't know who put this game together, or when. Until we have more and better information, we list this unique and apparently amalgamated non-payout game as a Converted Game done by an unknown company or person(s). We seek hi-res images of the underside of the playfield, including close-ups of the passive bumpers, to study if the bumpers and their wiring were added after-factory. used
