- This game was listed in Coin Machine Digest, August 1946, page 39, as one of the new pinball games in 1946 and having a list price of $189.50. The game was spelled as "Hi-Score", with a hyphen.
The only earlier references we found were a pictureless teaser ad in The Billboard, Feb-2-1946, page 55 and, three weeks later, an ad presenting the game for sale, also pictureless but offering a minimal game description. In these manufacturer ads, the game was spelled "Hi Score", without a hyphen.
This manufacturer began in January 1946 as Amusement Enterprises Company. By April of 1946 they had become Amusement Enterprises. Inc. They released a skee-ball game in January, "Bank Ball", that, based on the level of attention given it in Billboard, was very successful and we note that they sped up production of it in June (per Cash Box, Jun-24-1946 page 74). This skee-ball game survived a legal challenge in mid-year in New York State, proving it was a game of skill and not connected to gambling, to the delight of operators and others. We speculate that the production and success of "Bank Ball" may have placed "Hi Score" on the sidelines in terms of advertising and production, and our inability to find more information about it.
