- 'Gridiron' is a reissue of Genco's 1934 'Goal-Kick'. According to the Encyclopedia of Pinball Vol 2, the reissue was due to poor acceptance of the name 'Goal-Kick'.
The playfield kickers were used under license from Pacific Amusement Manufacturing Company, which held the patent for a device that elevated a ball from under the playfield as well as propelling the ball.
The upper playfield has an area defined by two elevated L-shaped rails enclosing six trap holes and the name GRIDIRON. Pictured in this listing are examples of three different configurations inside this area:
1) The Billboard ads from December 1934 show only two flat spring flags in this area, both positioned directly over the game name.
2) Another playfield has no flags over the game name and no apparent holes there where flags might have been. Instead, four of the six trap holes directly above the game name each have a flag.
3) Another playfield has two vertically-oriented metal ball guides directly over the game name, instead of flags, plus the four flags above them (one is missing). We suspect these ball guides were added by an operator as they block the effectiveness of the two flags directly above them.
