Circa 1931-32. This is a pin table with a whiffle style of playfield. The lower playfield has a paper apron upon which is printed Directions For Playing, a gambling Notice, and the words "MFD. BY THE FRED W. STEIN MFG. CO., ATCHISON, KANSAS". Frederick W. Stein of Atchison, Kansas (1888-1972) was described as an inventor, designer, manufacturer, philosopher, and businessman. According to the Atchison Daily Globe, May-11-1969, page 4, Stein "revolutionized the radio industry in 1926 by developing the first radio to plug into a light socket." In 1932, he formed Fred Stein Laboratories which specialized in radio and electronic instrument manufacturing. Stein was given an Honorary Doctor of Law in 1969 by St. Benedict's College. With his many accomplishments in electronics and science, we could not find any reference that he manufactured a non-electric mechanical pinball machine, other than what is printed on the apron of the game listed here.
