IPDB According to the Encyclopedia of Pinball Volume 1, Charles Gravatt first made this game and was operating it for six months in North Carolina where he lived when Charles Chizewer, President of Hercules Novelty Company, while traveling through North Carolina and looking for something new to manufacture, saw the game and convinced Gravatt to apply for a patent to protect his rights to it. Gravatt did so, and patent was granted in an unusually fast six weeks. Gravatt immediately granted limited rights for the mechanical flippers used in his game to Hercules Novelty Company who then produced it as their Junior Model and, shortly after, a Senior Model. When these rights expired, residual rights for them were obtained by Ken C. Shyvers in his continuing attempts to protect the "uphill action" aspect of his kicker patent for his Shyvers Coin Automatic Machine Company's 1934 'Cannon Fire'. Hercules Novelty Company also made this game as Private Label for Ad-Lee Company. See Ad-Lee Company's 1932 'Double-Shuffle'. We don't know if either company branded their games to allow us to know if there is any difference between them. The two companies seem to share the same game image in their advertisements where the name at top of playfield is hyphenated and displayed in a straight line, not an arc. Yet, we have photographs of the Junior model with the hyphenated name displayed in an arc. Until we know the reason for this difference, we arbitrarily place in the Hercules Novelty listing the game images showing a straight-line name and place in the Ad-Lee listing the games images showing an arced name. used
ipdb.notable_features
IPDB 1-cent or 5-cent play. Mechanical flippers (8). Each of two levers control four flippers simultaneously. The game has no plunger. Knob on cabinet front turns to raise ball to lowest flipper at bottom of playfield and is manipulated via the levers to raise the ball toward the higher scoring holes at the top. Junior model advertised as 15 inches by 31 inches, or 16 inches by 32 inches, depending on which ad you read from this manufacturer. A choice of wood or steel stand was sold separately. used
