ipdb.notes
IPDB This flipperless game has stationary bumpers that are shaped like flippers. The first flipper game by Genco was Genco's 1948 'Triple Action' in January 1948. Operators of this period would soon retrofit flipperless games, like Broncho, and these new flippers often ended up in unusual places on the playfield. Of the several games pictured in this listing, three are itemized below to point out the playfield and cabinet art differences. We have numbered the images of these games to correspond with their descriptions: #1) Green and yellow playfield. The seven lettered bumper caps are green and the three unlettered bumper caps are red. A red pop bumper and flippers were added after the game left the factory. The cabinet art does not match the cabinet in the Billboard ads. #2) Orange and yellow playfield. The seven lettered bumper caps are orange. The three unlettered bumper caps are purplish. No after-factory modifications are apparent. The cabinet art looks factory-quality and matches the cabinet art of Genco's 1948 'Triple Action'. #3) Another orange and yellow playfield. The seven lettered bumper caps are orange. On the lower playfield, the center bumper is purple while the bumpers on each side of it were replaced with red pop bumpers. Flippers were retrofitted as well, although the right flipper is missing and only its post hole is evident. The cabinet has been repainted. Inside the cabinet, two numbers 1177 and 104 are penciled. #4) Another green and yellow playfield. The seven lettered bumper caps are green and the three unlettered bumper caps are red. No retrofitted flippers on this playfield but inexplicably two of the four kick-out holes have been plugged. The entire right side of the cabinet (not shown here) has been overpainted in a solid cream color. The left-side cabinet art does not match the cabinet in the Billboard ads but does match the cabinet of our game images marked #1. #5) Another green and yellow playfield. The seven lettered bumper caps are green and the three unlettered bumper caps are red. No retrofitted flippers. This cabinet art does match the cabinet in the Billboard ads. #6) Another green and yellow playfield. The seven lettered bumper caps are green and the three unlettered bumper caps are red. No retrofitted flippers. This cabinet art does match the cabinet in the Billboard ads. The playfield has been retrofitted with Wico's 1948 'Whirlwind Play Booster'. Setting aside the obvious after-factory modifications, both playfield color versions appear to be factory-quality. Unfortunately, we find only black-and-white advertisements from the manufacturer to assist our understanding of this. More contemporaneous photos of this game are needed (or more 1940's ads) to study if multiple cabinet art designs could have been produced by the manufacturer. Although one or more of the cabinets presented here are repainted, we include them in this listing in order to anticipate any user questions about it, as we continue to gather additional information about this game. Production start date: 09/03/47 Production end date: 03/23/48 We previously showed a date for this game of October 1947. used
