Western Products, Inc. began advertising this game in December 1938. It appears to be a continuation of Western Equipment's 1938 'Baseball' but was renamed on its marquee for the upcoming new year. This game was made in various models and under a few different names until 1941 when the company went out of business. In this listing, all games will have these features: A non-illuminating marquee (a flat board, not a backbox) indicating the words "Western's 1939 Baseball' with the year overlaid diagonally on top of the name 'Baseball'. No free game button to the immediate right of the coin slide. The novelty version of this game was not emphasized in advertising as a "novelty" game until the free play and payout versions were produced starting in April, 1939. See also Western Products' 1939 '1939 Baseball (Free Game Model)' See also Western Products' 1939 '1939 Baseball (Payout Model)' The Billboard article from Apr-15-1939, page 82 that we have labeled here as an "Upgrade Announcement" indicates that the Novelty model was redesigned to have the new illuminating backbox designed for the free play and payout models. However, we have seen no evidence of this upgrade for the Novelty model. In fact, a later Billboard ad dated June-17-1939 on page 82 continues to show the flat board marquee and inexplicably for all three models, with a picture conveniently cropped so any free game button or payout cup cannot be seen. This may have been done for purposes of advertising expediency in place of accuracy.
