Zaccaria

Overview

Zaccaria was the preeminent Italian pinball manufacturer and one of the most significant European producers in the history of the medium. Founded in Bologna in 1974 by the Zaccaria family, the company produced pinball machines for nearly two decades, building a catalog of more than one hundred titles that ranged across the Electromechanical and Solid State eras.

What distinguished Zaccaria was not merely volume but aesthetic ambition. The company’s machines featured backglass and playfield artwork with a vivid, sometimes surreal quality that set them apart from American contemporaries — scenes of science fiction, mythology, and fantasy rendered with an Italian graphic sensibility that was entirely its own. Gameplay was often inventive, with Zaccaria designers willing to experiment with unusual playfield layouts and mechanisms that their American counterparts rarely attempted.

The company’s machines circulated primarily within Italy and Europe, but a dedicated international collector community has developed around them in the decades since Zaccaria ceased production in 1993. Today, Zaccaria pins are among the most sought-after European machines, and the brand has experienced a kind of afterlife through digital reproductions that have introduced a new generation to the company’s remarkable legacy.
