Upper Left Kickback Lanes

Upper left kickback lanes are Left Kickback Lanes set high on the playfield rather than down beside the flippers. A ball that works its way up the left flank runs into the lane and is kicked straight back out into the upper playfield, so the lane is a scoring route the player aims for rather than a save for a ball already lost.

Bally built one into Playboy (1978) and gave it a name of its own, the Grotto,^[1] and Gottlieb used the same arrangement across the four machines of its Hit the Deck / Neptune family in 1978 and 1979.
